A TUGGERAH barber shop has been reported to the Anti-Discrimination Board of NSW for refusing to cut a transgender man’s hair.

Casey Franklin said he approached the Kingsmen Hair barber shop at Westfield on October 4 for a haircut but was told “we only cut men’s hair”.

He said he was a man but was told “no you’re not” and that then the staff refused to cut his hair.

Mr Franklin said he left the store humiliated and told his transgender partner who was in another store at the time of the incident.

Mr Franklin’s partner Blaise Harris said she approached the store where the staff told her that Mr Franklin was “not a real man, she’s a woman”.

Ms Harris, who was born in the Middle East and speaks Arabic, said one of the staff spoke to another staff member in Arabic, sating words to the effect of: “another f ... ing tranny”.

“I got angry at this point and asked them not to speak about me in that way,” Ms Harris said. “I said ‘how dare you’. [The staff member] said ‘how do you know what I said?’.”

In a letter from Kingsmen Hair’s lawyer Doug Eaton, in response to Mr Franklin’s complaint, the former Wyong Mayor said his client “vehemently denies the allegations”.

Mr Eaton said Mr Franklin approached barber Hussein Al Saadi for a haircut but was told “I’m sorry we are a men’s only barber”.

Mr Eaton said Mr Al Saadi told Mr Franklin: “I’m sorry, you are dressed like a woman and I couldn’t tell”.

“Mr Franklin then grabbed his crotch and stated the words ‘look I have a d***’,” Mr Eaton wrote.

Mr Franklin denied grabbing his crotch.

He said he was wearing a men’s shirt, a binder under shirt, chino shorts, male underwear and men’s shoes at the time.

In his letter Mr Eaton said Mr Franklin’s “male” partner approached the staff in an “angry and abusive manner”. Mr Eaton said Mr Franklin’s partner threatened to ruin the shop on social media and get compensation from the “stupid Arabs”.

Ms Harris, who is legally a woman and has large noticeable breasts, said those allegations were “completely false”.

“I have never been, nor would I ever be racist against Arabs or make such comments,” she said.

A spokesman for Kingsmen Hair said he would let his solicitor deal with the complaint.

“I have no idea what’s going on with that lady (Mr Franklin),” he said.
